Be the Brand:

  1. Always look your best. You don’t know who you’re going to meet at the 7-11, and you don’t know when someone is going to snap a photo of you. Always dress appropriately for your age and the situation, and people will always remember you as a pulled-together professional, whether their most recent sighting of you was at the mall or a board meeting.
  2. Learn all you can about your specialty. You may have earned your degree two years ago or 10 – or not at all. However, industries change and customers’ needs vary. Dedicate time every week to learning something new about your industry and something new about your competitors.
  3. Be ready to change to meet the demands of an evolving world. Being on the cutting edge of technology or your industry can open you up to new possibilities. The early bird gets the worm.
  4. Get some manners. Nothing will make your brand look as shabby as an unpolished self. If you know you weren’t brought up in as gentile a manner as those you aspire to be, buy a book or take a course. Remember, too, that good manners are generally just making people feel good about themselves.
  5. Speak like a pro. Some of us were born with the innate desire to stand in front of a crowd and wax eloquent. If you’re not one of them, join a local chapter of toastmasters and find opportunities to practice. People feel uncomfortable when they hear nervous people speaking in public – and if not choosing you means avoiding that, they will.
  6. Update your brand constantly. Look at your homepage at least once a week and update your resume monthly. When you have an idea that relates to your brand, write it as soon as possible and add it to your body of work.
  7. Join a networking group and participate. It doesn’t matter what you have to offer if you’re not offering it to anyone. Start small if you must – but definitely start!
  8. Surround yourself with winners. A little reflected glory never hurt anyone.
  9. Be kind to everyone. If someone is gossiping with you about someone else, they’re probably gossiping about you with them. Smashing someone when they’re down may mean they’ll do the same when you’re down. It just pays to be nice – not a doormat, but kind.
  10. Look for opportunity. It’s probably lurking there under your radar, but you’re too busy juggling your Starbucks and your company’s last annual report. You just have to recognize it when it knocks.
